Dental Emergency

What to do in the Event of A Dental Emergency

Abscess

An abscessed tooth constitutes an emergency!  The abscess is a localized pus formation usually located at the root end of the tooth.  Left untreated, pus will continue to collect at the site of the infection.  The pain will increase.  The abscess can either rupture or drain on its own or can be drained surgically.  The dentist may first prescribe antibiotics and analgesics to control the abscess before going ahead with treatment such as root canal.

The abscess can be the result of bacteria from a cavity extending into the gums, the cheek, the throat, beneath the tongue, or even into the jaw or facial bones. At this point the abscess can become very painful as a result of inflamed tissues.

Should the abscess finally rupture, the pain is likely to decrease but dental treatment is still very much necessary.

If the abscess does not drain, the infection can spread to other areas of the head and neck and can become life threatening.
