| PREPARING YOUR CHILD FOR DENTAL VISIT |
As a parent or care giver, there is much you
can do to prepare your children for their
first visits to the dentist. A child's first
visit may determine his or her attitude
towards dental visits for numerous years to
follow. First, make sure you're relaxed and
at ease with your child over dental
examinations and treatment. If you're
anxious, the child will sense this and carry
those fears with them to the dentist's
chair. Avoid the use of words like hurt,
drill, shot, X-ray, or needle. Ensure that
older siblings or others do not tell your
child about experiences or stories that
could generate fear and anxious feelings.
Try to make going to the dentist a special
or enjoyable occasion. We try very hard to
earn our young patients' confidence and will
talk to children about the various steps
along the way, using child-friendly
terminology.
Also very important is the fact that you can
be the positive role model in your
children's developing attitudes and habits
over dental care. Set a good example by
brushing and flossing every day, yourself.
Talk about the advantages of having strong,
beautiful, and natural teeth, for life!
