POST & CORE

When necessary, a procedure to rebuild proper support for a cap or crown can be accomplished with the aid of a metallic structure, known as a post, which is placed within the body of the root of a tooth that has had previous root canal therapy. The fact that a nerve will die once entered by the dentist allows for this insertion and the space previously occupied by the nerve is filled. In fabricating the post, some of the plastic filling is removed, with just enough left to seal the end of the root. The space remaining will be necessary to achieve the anchorage of the post within the root of the tooth. A post can be prefabricated, or it can be cast at a dental labouratory. The core refers to the part of the post which remains visible. It is upon the core that a cap or crown is then anchored.
