| SAFETY CONCERN BEFORE LIDOCAINE
(FREEZING) WEARS OFF |
Following a dental session in which the
patient was administered lidocaine, also
known as freezing, a local anesthesia, the
patient will feel the affects of the
anesthesia for awhile. Depending on the area
and number of injections, the patient could
experience a numbness for up to three hours
following the appointment and during this
time can be very susceptible to oral injury.
A soft diet is recommended to avoid biting
the inside of the lip or mouth, or perhaps
burning with hot coffee or other drink. The
patient would be oblivious to the injury due
to the effects of the anesthesia. If your
child has had lidocaine, keep an eye on
her/him to ensure they do not injure
themselves and discourage them from
"playing" or biting down on the numb area.
Again, for your child, try to avoid hot
beverages or solid food until the affects
have dissipated.
