Osseointegrated Titanium Dental Implants

Bone quality and quantity are evaluated
Osseointegrated Titanium Dental Implants
A very promising area for dentistry is the titanium dental implant that becomes integrated with the bone. These new implants are positioned in a site prepared into the bone and left undisturbed for four to six months. The internal portion of these implants is threaded in order for the dental prosthesis to be attached with small threaded fasteners. Treatment indications range from a single tooth implant to an implant-supported full denture. The requirements of function, durability and cosmetics are well met with the successful placement of dental implants.

The implant is placed and given four to six months to heal.

After completion of the healing phase, the implant is uncoverd and the dentist can then complete the restorative phase of the treatment

Restoration is fixed to the osseointegrated dental implants.

This photo series displays the clinical steps necessary for successful treatment of an implant-supported removable partial denture.

Implants have been placed and are "sleeping" during the four to six month healing phase of treatment.

Implants are uncoverd from their "sleeping" conditon. Healing phase of treatment is complete and the dentist can now attach the appropriate retentive fixtures to the implants.

Clinical photo series of implant-supported removable partial denture.

A pre-fabricated retentive bar is now secured (threaded) into the implants.
The "mating" retentive feature is processed into the removable partial denture. The implant-supported removable partial denture will them "snap" on and off the retentive bar much like the snaps on a jacket. Special care and attention to dental hygiene is essential to insure long-term treatment success!

The "fixed" implant-supported full denture.

After the four to six month healing phase is complete, the implants are now ready for the full denture to be secured directly to them.

This lower complete denture is now fully implant-supported and "fixed" to the implants with threaded fasteners. The advantages are: denture stability, patient comfort and patient confidence. The disadvantages are: difficult access for implant hygiene, inadequate lower lip support and the fact that only a dentist can remove the denture.

After the four to six month healing phase is complete, a custom-fabricated retentive bar is secured to the implants with threaded fasteners.

This case required three retentive features processed into the denture base to engage the retentive bar and hold the denture firmly in place. This design permits the patient to retrieve the denture without the aid of a dentist. Patient access for implant and denture hygiene is greatly improved.
